Generally, manufacturers do not need to register their products with FDA or get FDA approval before producing or selling dietary supplements.
There were recently a couple of FDA approved prescription drugs. The first drug, Qsymia saw patients lose 6.7-8.9 percent of their body weight, while the second, Belviq, saw a 3-3.7 percent loss.
These drugs can be beneficial for some, but they are by no means a magic bullet – many require the patient to be on a low-calorie diet in order to see any results. Not to mention, there's a host of side-effects, including risk of abuse and addiction and health complications.
Qsymia uses an appetite suppressant and an anti-seizure drug that diminishes the desire for food.
Belviq works in the brain to control neurotransmitter serotonin that helps them feel full.
